The story revolves around Benoy Roy, who has everything money can buy: wealth and strong family influence. Known as a wealthy brat, stud, and a heartbreaker, Benoy seemingly has a perfect life, using his father’s money and power to get out of situations. However, beneath the facade of this reputation lies a young boy shattered by the death of his mother due to cancer, leaving him almost parentless due to his distant relationship with his father. 

The story develops when he realises that one of the professors refuses to be swayed by his family’s influence and money; Benoy is forced to attend classes for the first time. There, he crosses paths with Diya, an outspoken girl who clashes with Benoy. Soon, their clashes turn into an unlikely friendship. 

But everything changes, and the story takes a 360-degree turn when Benoy meets Shaina- Diya’s younger sister. As the attraction between Benoy and Shaina grows, they begin meeting without Diya’s knowledge, and later it grows into something deeper. Shaina’s heartwarming presence healed Benoy’s wounds he thought would never fade. 

Just when he believes that he has found his true love and not just a fling, Shaina walks away. But why does she push him away? What are the secrets that she is hiding? Is Benoy ready to suffer another heartbreak after losing the person he loved the most? 

Thoughts on the Protagonists of You Were My Crush

Benoy Roy and Shaina, the protagonists of “You Were My Crush Till You Said You Love Me”, are realistic and layered characters, adding depth to the narrative. They bring their own strengths, complexities, flaws, and conflicts to the story, making it an interesting read. 

Here’s my view on the protagonists of You Were My Crush Till You Said You Love Me: 

1. Benoy Roy 

Now that you’ve read the blurb, it is quite clear that Benoy was a wealthy and carefree young college boy, known for his reputation as a stud and a heartbreaker. Although his love story with Shaina personally felt very conventional when the narrative shows how Benoy, known for his casual relationships and flings, falls in love with Shaina, the love that he realises is true and deep, far beyond casual flings.

What I really liked about Benoy’s character is that he is not without flaws. Moreover, I believe that while his grief explains many of his emotional struggles with people, it does not justify his recklessness and disregard for his responsibilities. 

Quite a few times, I caught myself unable to sympathize with his personality but defending his behaviour at the same time. Personally, he felt like a complex character whose evolution from the spoiled rich brat to a healing young man is worth reading. 

2. Shaina  

Although a lot is not said about Shaina in the novel, her character personally felt conventional but complex. Shaina feels conventional in the sense that, like in many other romantic novels, the female counterpart is compassionate and mature, helping the male counterpart heal and transform. Shaina does the same. However, what adds a layer of complexity is the question of why she does not draw boundaries initially and later pushes Benoy away, realising that she needs to stop it all. 

In the beginning, when Benoy starts falling in love with her, she represents healing, growth, transformation, and a chance of a fresh start, but later she creates emotional confusion for Benoy, leaving him under the burden of losing yet another person he loved. Hence, her character also felt realistic in the sense that it was far beyond perfection. 

Themes and Emotional Depth in Datta’s You Were My Crush Novel 

Although the novel delved into multiple themes apart from romance, such as loss, grief, heartbreak, and complex relationships, what stood out to me were the themes of healing, friendships, loss, and grief. 

Here’s everything you need to know: 

1. Strained Relationships, Loss, and Grief 

One thing that really impresses me about the novels of Durjoy Datta is that he never whitewashes the image of any character; he presents it with utmost honesty and sincerity. Grief, in this novel, reshapes the family relationships. 

After the death of Benoy’s mother, he is unable to process the loss, and somehow his pain takes the form of rebellion, arrogance, and reckless behaviour. Although mourning a loss does not justify one’s reckless behaviour, it could be a way of showing how unresolved grief affects not only individuals but also the people closest to them. 

Moreover, the conflict and the distant relationship of Deboy and his father further added depth to the novel, and hence, from a critical perspective, the grief and loss are relatable and accessible. The question of losing yet another person, Shaina, whom he deeply loves, is what haunts him, making him question whether he is worthy of love at all. 

2. Love, Healing, and Friendships 

What really stood out to me was that Benoy’s father had everything that his son could use to get anything in this world; however, that money could never buy him the peace of mind and the strength to overcome the loss. While the novel begins as a light-hearted story of a stud college boy, it soon develops into something deeper, which shows how only meaningful relationships can help people overcome emotional scars; be it friends or a romantic partner. 

His friendship with Eshan, support from his cousin Deb, and eventually Shaina, his romantic partner, offered him a sense of belonging and stability.  Although his relationship with Shaina is marked by uncertainty at first, it develops into an emotional bond, eventually healing and transforming Benoy. 

Writing Style in Durjoy Datta’s You Were My Crush Novel

Known for his simple, fast-paced writing, Durjoy Datta presents his novel “You Were My Crush”, written in a fluid and accessible writing style that makes this novel an easy and engaging read.
