Dark Matter Book: A Quick Spoiler-Free Summary

Dark matter novel cover

Jason, the protagonist of the novel, is an atomic physicist and a professor in a college based in Chicago. Married to Daniela, a private art instructor, he has a 15-year-old son named Charlie. After his child is born, Jason and his wife make a deliberate choice to leave his career for the sake of their family.

While suffering with this reality, Jason encounters a version of himself from the multiverse who builds a special box that lets one enter different versions of themselves, beyond time and space. As the story progresses, Jason is abducted and sent to the other universe where he is a successful scientist. This not only creates a new world for him but also starts a complicated race for him to find his way back to his true world.

Characters in the Dark Matter Novel: In Between Different Realities

The core characters of the novel are Jason, Amanda, Charlie, and Daniela. Jason and Daniela exist in all the realities, just rather differently. This novel mainly centres around how Jason(s) navigates his way through different universes and finds his way to his home.

Take a look at the core characters of the novel for a better understanding:

1. Jason(s)

Character Traits:  Family devotion, Intellectual and Resilient,.

Jason, a college professor, is the protagonist of the novel, who is stuck with the dilemma of whether giving up his career for the sake of his family was the right decision. In my opinion, the different versions of Jason in the multiverse show the consequences of all the choices the narrator could have made, even the slightest ones. As told by Rayn Holder, one of Jason’s friends:

“ Look, I have taught at MIT, Harvard, and John Hopkins, the best schools on the planet. Jason, you would  have changed the world if you’d decided to go that path, if you’d stuck with it.”

While Jason, in a way, does live a life of scientific glory and changing the world, ultimately he wanted to resort to a family life. For me, this also highlights how familial, above all, is of core importance for all the Jasons. Written with extreme emotional and intellectual depth, the character development of Jason is compelling to read.

2. Daniela Dessen

Character Traits: Creative, emotional, and loyal.

Daniela Dessen, just like Jason, in both universes is caught up in the dilemma of the other choice. While Daniela in the primary universe is content with motherhood and what came after, some part of the character hopes to live the other choice. Daniela 2, on the other hand, lives in regret about being involved with Jason 1 when the realities were swapped. While both are content in their chosen lives, they share the same love for their husbands. In terms of character depth, the role of Daniela is underexplored in the book, which is also a major criticism of the novel.

3. Charlie

Character Traits: Observant and quiet ( he has a silent presence in the novel.)

Charlie, in my opinion, is the anchor of the novel, primarily because he is the reason that Jason made the decision to give up his career. While Charlie, unlike his parents, is not under any burden of choice and regret, he was given the decision to choose a reality for the family, which can affect the way the Dessens live their lives. Also, other than being the driver of Jason 1’s decision, Charlie, as an independent character, does not have much role to play.

4. Amanda

Character Traits: Compassionate and practical.

Amanda is a psychiatrist in the Jason2 universe who helps Jason Prime escape and find his way back home. As she works in the Velocity Labs, she understands the workings of the “box.” She travels to multiple dimensions with Jason but has to part ways as she is found to be a traitor in her universe. A small part but an impactful one, as she is the only multi-world companion of Jason who also acts as his emotional support in that universe.

Core Themes in Dark Matter By Blake Crouch: Critical Analysis

In the novel, the idea of choice and how it shapes our reality, familial love, identity, and the multiverse are some core themes that drive the narrative forward. How far one goes to trace their way back to the family for which he sacrificed his passion remains central throughout the novel.

Here are some core themes of the Dark Matter Novel:

1. Choices

“We’re more than the total of our choices; all the paths we might have taken factor somehow into the math of our identity.”

The novel ‘Dark Matter’ is a stark exploration of the themes of choices and what is on the side of every decision one makes. This novel moves through realities, examining the consequences of each decision that the character makes. While on the surface this seems like just a matter of two choices, on a deeper level it is more than that. Through the story of Jason, Crouch brings forth the complex human mind, which constantly juggles between the “what ifs?”

2. Family

According to me, familial love is a central theme of the novel. The choice that the protagonist makes is driven by the love and connection he feels for his family. Even as the novel progresses to different realities, Jason is caught up in the sacrifice between family and career. The importance of family is also highlighted in two ways: first, Jason 1 chooses family over career, and Jason 2, having chosen the “better” alternative, feels the void of true family love, which makes him swap realities with the narrator.

3. Multiverse

“It is terrifying when we consider that every thought we have, every choice we could make, branches off into a new world.”

This quote perfectly encapsulates the theme of the multiverse in the book. The book, through its scientific backdrop, uses the concept of the multiverse to portray how each of our choices leads to a different reality. I personally like the way Blake Crouch keeps the text very human-like, rather than embedding complex physics into it to explore the multiverse. Additionally, the existence of different realities and versions of you can also be interpreted as a symbol of human dilemma. Through Jason, readers can explore that there is never a “better” choice.

4. Identity

“I feel ashamed, like a lot of races to a better opponent. A man of epic vision has built this box. A smarter,  better me.”

The book very meticulously moves between different identities of the same person, who are living the consequences of their choice. Both the Jasons, while living in alternate realities, witness the other side of the choice that was made long ago. While Jason encounters different versions of himself, he struggles with his true self and what he truly wants.

What I Liked and Disliked in the Dark Matter Book

Here are some of the things that I like and dislike in the Dark Matter book:

What I Liked What I Disliked
The fast-moving plot. The ending could have been nuanced.
Simple writing, with short sentences, which makes it very comprehensible. No depth in the secondary characters like the wife and the son.

Blake Crouch’s Writing Style in the Dark Matter Book

Blake Crouch opts for straightforward, lucid language that does not confuse the readers. He uses first-person perspective writing, which adds to the emotional depth of the character and the story, making it sound more personal.

Here are 3 narrative techniques in the Dark Matter novel that stood out for me:

Simple and Easy to Read

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Crouch uses a simple and minimalist approach in the book. Unlike many sci-fi novels, the book uses a rather simple language that is easy to grasp. The use of small sentences and short paragraphs helps the reader understand the complex scientific concepts. One standout feature in terms of his writing is how he sticks to the first-person, present-tense format, which makes the novel extremely lucid.

Fast-Paced

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

One thing that Blake Crouch does right with the book is create a fast-moving plot. It contains short chapters which provide just the sufficient amount of information without extending the storyline, making it harder to understand. The protagonist constantly shuffles between different realities rapidly. This swift pacing is a deliberate choice by Crouch, which does not give time to either the characters or the readers to process what is happening, which in turn adds to the intensity of the novel.

Cinematic Approach

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Personally, I enjoyed the screenplay-like writing approach that Blake Crouch follows in the novel. This was primarily because Crouch was simultaneously writing a screenplay for the adaptation of the book. Alongside this, the use of heavy imagery, like the cube, dark hallway, and the infinite corridor, adds to the visual depth, which makes it feel closer to reality.

Books Similar to the Dark Matter Novel: A Sci-Fi Exploration

The list of books you should read if you enjoyed Dark Matter includes Recursion by Blake Crouch,  Daemon by Daniel Suarez, The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton, and  The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch.

Take a look at why these books make the perfect TBR after Dark Matter:

S.No Title Why You Should Read It
1.Recursion A compelling scientific thriller that deals with the themes of memory and manipulation.
2.Daemon Daemon revolves around an automated computer programme that gets activated automatically upon the demise of its owner. The story explores the limits of technology and its control over humans.
3.The Andromeda Strain A techno-thriller that follows a wildfire project and the presence of alien life on Earth, and the danger it can pose to human life.
4.The Gone WorldGone World is a murder mystery that follows a detective trying to unravel the murder of a family against the backdrop of time travel.

Personal Recommendation

If you are a fan of romance and thrillers, I would suggest you read “The Girl of My Dreams” by Durjoy Dutta. It perfectly blends subtle themes of love with dark and intense thrilling suspense, ideal for an easy-to-go read.

Thoughts on the OTT Adaptation of Dark Matter

Dark Matter series

Dark Matter series is an Apple TV adaptation of the novel, which first aired in 2024 with 19 episodes across 2 seasons. As per IMDB, the movie differs from the book on various internal levels. Having read the book, I felt the series was a completely new take on the plot. The novel focused more on the perspective of Jason 1, but the series had Jason2 in the centre, focusing on how he manages to deal with the Prime Jason’s family. Some prime examples include:

  1. Jason buys a car for Charlie without consulting his wife, which is unlike Jason 1.
  2. Not attending the tree ceremony of their late son ( this son does not exist in the movie)
  3. Seeking help from Amanda in Universe 1, where the characters do not know each other.

Meanwhile, the series ending does not have Jason 2 dead, as it follows a kind of redemption arc for the character. Still, the book has Jason 2 killed and Jason 1 returning to his family after defeating all his different versions. Conclusively, the series does stand out from the book, but differs in terms of the actual plot and the protagonist’s point of view. In my opinion, rather than a blind adaptation of the book, the series is an extended perspective of the same.

Final Thoughts: Is the Dark Matter Book Worth Reading?

In conclusion, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch is an easy, gripping read for fans of thrillers with a blend of scientific discovery. The fast-paced storyline works best for new readers wanting to explore thrillers that are deep-rooted in complex scientific ideas. I loved the way Crouch has explored the emotional complexities of the protagonist with such simplicity. Another standout feature is that the author sticks to human emotions rather than scientific exploration, which makes the story closer to human life.

My rating: 3.5/5
